Natural childbirth, the new method of giving birth to a baby with little or no anesthetic, may substantially reduce infant mortality.
A team of doctors from Yale University, where the "childbirth without fear" method was first introduced in this country in 1946, today said that in a few years "we hope to be able to demonstrate that training for childbirth can lower infant' mortality."
They are here to lead a conference on maternal and newborn care which is being held this week at Hotel Dieu and is open to all doctors and nurses.
The team includes Dr. Edith B. Jackson, clinical professor of pediatrics and psychiatry; Dr. Sylvia Preston, rooming-in pediatric fellow; Dr. Robert Wyatt, senior associate resident in obstetrics and gynecology, and Miss Kate 0. Hyder, associate professor of obstetric nursing...The conference is sponsored jointly by the LSU department of nursing education and the mater- nal and child health section of the Louisiana State Health Dept.
