Abstract	An intensive surface survey of the Yucuita sector of the Nochixtlan Valley, Oaxaca, Mexico, was conducted during 1980. The project was designed to gather detailed information about two important archaeological settlements, Yucuita and Yucunudahui. In order to evaluate the development of these two sites it was necessary to obtain data about the villages and hamlets located in the surrounding area, i.e., those settlements that probably participated in and were affected by the changes and growth at Yucuita and Yucunudahui. The study includes maps of most of the sites surveyed and descriptions of the surface remains It is argued that during the Early Formative the Nochixtlan Valley experienced a period of accelerated cultural evolution and that this may have been the product of three factors: (1) small, circumscribed geographical area, (2) small, but relatively dense, population, and (3) limited natural resources. The rapid evolution of complex society does not appear to have continued into the Middle and Late Formative and it is suggested that this again is due to the factors listed above since the area probably did not have sufficient resource potential for the sui generis development of state society. State forms of integration, however, seem to have been adopted from the Zapotecs during the Terminal Formative. It is also suggested that the intensive agricultural systems of the Mixteca Alta may have first been implemented in response to greater tribute demands by the rules of the emerging Mixtec kingdoms and that this intensification may have paved the way for population growth during the latter part of the Classic period
