Washin8ton State's Couf6aPs
Tulane's Green Wave will be called on to quell
a real Far West threat next Saturday-a team that
will be d·etermined to break the impressive record
of Dixie teams over those of the Pacific Coast.
The Washington State Cougars bring a team to
New Orleans boasting Captain Turk Edwards, allAmerican
tackle of I 9 30. Edwards is a man mountain.
At the other tackle, Walter Camp, is said to
be one of th·e finest players of the Pacific Coast.
Hein, an end, is a great player. So is Dahlen,
Sanders and others of tbe backfield. This Sanders
is a great triple threat.
The Cougars have beaten som•e of the outstanding
teams of their conference-the Pacific Coast
loop. They beat the finest team Montana has ever
boasted, 13 to 0. They b•eat Oregon State, 7 to 6.
They trounced Gonzaga, a powerful coast team, 1 3
to 6. They were barely beaten by the University
of California, a touchdown margin deciding the
game.
So look out for this Cougar machine.
SIDE LINE CLUBBERS GETTING READY
Mr. Charles Kohlm·eyer and Mr. Harold Salmon,
officers of the Tulane Side Line Club are now busy
preparing for the biggest banquet even tendered
the Greeni<:s. They are working on plans for a
great turnout of fans around the middle of january
for the banquet, a great program of entertainment
and talks by many outstanding men.
The players are annually awarded letters at th·e
banquet and Mr. Kohlmeyer plans to make this the
biggest event of its nature ever accorded Tulane's
Green Wave. Every citizen of New Orleans and
every follower of Tulane from coast to coast will
tind the welcome mat out that night.
The invitation, informal and mainly extended
through the columns of the Press, will be open to
all friends of Tulane. The announc·ement of the
exact time and date will be issued within a short
time and the place to purchase th•e banquet tickets
will be given in the same announcement.
LOOK FOR NEXT ISSUE OF GREENIE
Photos of many of the Greenie football stars
will be run in the next issue of The Greenie.
Your favorite player may be in th·e batch of good
pictures ready for next week.
So take a peep.
Every issue of The Greenie is individual in its
newness; all n•ew pictures, reading matter, art and
the many things injected into its columns to make
it a real Tulane football magazine.

COACH RUSSELL COHEN
L. S. U.
SOUVENIR TULANE FOOTBALL PROGRAM SEASON 1931
"Lefty" on Left End
By Lefty Haynes
You may think that you got a big kick out of
watching the Georgia game, but playing in that
game was the thrill of a lifetime. Only one thing
feels better than hitting a man right above the knee
to block him out, and that is feeling the ball touch
your hands when you're on the receiving end of a
forward pass.
The greatest feature of the Tulane victory over
G·eorgia, to my way of think:ng, was the outstanding
team work which we have succeeded in perfecting.
Every man on the squad is willing to sacrifice hs
own personal glory for the benefit of the team. Our
team has never looked like a on· star club, and
though there has been a star back out for nearly
every game, we have carried on just the same.
If there is any one man who deS'rves an extra
amount of credit, it is our captain, Jerry Dalrymple.
Every one admits that Jerry is a flawless end, but
few people realize how •wonderfully he performs his
extra duties as captain of the team.
In the Georgia game, he walked back and forth
behind the line before nearly every play, encouraging
or threatening th linesmen according to what
the psychology of the situation demanded. His uncanny
diagnosis of plays usually enables him to
tell both the linesmen and the backfieldmen which
way the next play is coming even before it starts.
There can never be enough said and written about
the way Jerry dopes the enemy plays. 1t is almost
impossible for him to do what he does, and his feats
must be due to most unusually rapid perception and
co-ordination.
Jerry is the quickest thinker 1 ever saw, and he
can reach a decision before anybody else has even
stopped to consider. Down on the 6 yard line,
when Georgia was supposed to be penalized 5 yards
for offsides, the referee started to walk back with
the ball automatically. Before any of the rest of
us even thought it over, jerry had called him back
and refused the penalty.
This choice of 4th down and 6, instead of 3rd
down and I I was more important than most people
realize, for the I • yard pos1t1on would have given
Georgia a better chance to pull Catfish Smith· s favorite
pass just over the line. From the 6 yard line,
it would have been difficult for the Bulldogs to
pass without passing over the goal line and giving
us the ball on the 20 yard line. Jerry thought all
this out in a split second.
Jerry considers it one of the duties of a captain
to take a look over the whole field befor each play
starts. This habit proved very fortunate then,
and most probably won the game for us, for it explains
how Jerry happened to see Catfish Smith when
he was hiding out n·ar the side lines. It is not one
of the jobs of an end to locate the opposing end,
so jerry did not miss Catfish from the lineup, but
was merely following his self-made rules for a captain.
He did not have long enough to notify a
back to get out th·ue in time so he did the only
possible thing he could do, before anyone else on
the squad had even seen Catfish. He grabbed the
ball from the Georgia center, calling to the referee
for time out-the only possible way he could have
kept the ball from being passed to Catfish. He
drew a penalty, not for off-sides, as is generally
thought, but for interfering with a play being run.
This was well worth while, for Catfish was wide
open.
All kinds of fame are supposed to be transient,
but the days of football glory are bound to be especially
brief. You're a h·ero today, and a bum
tomorrow,-or next year, anyway.
Jerry Dalrymple, however, is one hero that will
not be through when his football days are over, for
after he has played his last game, h·e will still have
all the qualities that have made him such an outstanding
success on the gridiron. He will always
have hjs quick, steady perception, his marvelous
capacity for making rapid, accurate decisions, his
innate, practical knowl·edge of psychology, and a
natural ability for leadership.

ALMA MATER
Sing these words as Tulane's Alma Mater is played
II
We praise thet- for thy past, 0 Alma Mater!
Thy hand hath done its work full faithfully!
The incense of thy spirit hath ascended
And filled America from sea to sea I
Ill
We praise thee for thy present, Alma Mater!
Today thy Children look to thee for bread I
Thou lead est them to dreams and actions splendid I
The hunger of their soul is richly fed I
We praise thee for thy future, Alma Mater I
The vista of its glory gleameth far!
We ever shall be part of thee, great Mother!
There thou wilt be where e'er thy children are!
CHORUS
Olive Green and Blue, we love thee I
Pledge we now our fealty true
Where the trees are ever greenest,
Where the skies are purest blue!
Hear us now, 0 Tulane, hear us I
As we proudly sing to thee!
Take from us our hearts' devotion!
Thine we are, and thine shall be I
