Colgate
The Red Raiders Ride Again
Andy Kerr, the lightweight wizard of football's faculty,
has another dashing Colgate team in the field. The Red
Raidc:rs of the: Che:nango Valle:y have: met defeat only
once this season and that time by the narrow margin of
one kicked ball. It was a field goal that gave Ohio
State, one of the best Conference teams, a margin of
victory over Colgate when the Red Raiders invaded the
Ohio territory some weeks ago.
But Colgate came back from that setback to throw
the heavy Holy Cross team for a complete loss and now
faces a chance to upset a Tulane team that has been riding
high in the Southland and is one of the unbeaten teams
of the country. Andy Kerr's type of football is well
known and widely appreciated. A disciple of Pop Warner,
Andy teaches the double-wingback system of offense with
its bewildering spinner plays and double and triple passes
-fakes and otherwise-behind the line. One of the
problems an opposing team has 10 solve-and solve
quickly- is: Who has the ball?
Added (0 a fast and dC1:eptive running game, Coach
Kerr has, of course, a great overhead attack. Win or
lose, the Colgate type of play is great to watch and it
might be added that Colgate docsn't often lose. The
two co·captains of the Red Raiders are Jack Fritts, left
halfback, and Clary Anderson, quarterback, both from
lI.lontdair, N. J. Fritts worked as a life guard in the
Summer and, incidentally, aided in rescue work after the
Morro Castle disaster.
Joe Bogdanski, veteran left end. is the fellow who
caught the touchdown pass that defeated N. Y. U. last
year. He is a great defensive end and one of the best
blockers on any eastern gridiron. Claire Lyon at fullback
is a strong plunger and blocker and a reliable kicker.
Lewis Brooke at left tackle is picked by expert observers
as one of the best of the season at his position. In fact,
there are fine players at all stations along the line and in
the backfield and Colgate rooters are convinced that
Andy Kerr and his Red Raiders from the Chenango
Valley are the ones who will topple T ulane from the
undefeated class.
LITTLE MONK SIMONS
Tulane
The Green Waye is Rolling High
T ulane University IS located in a pleasant part of the
old city of New Orleans, facing the famous Audubon
Park with ,es towering oottonwoods Ilnd its li,'c oaks .
It has turned Ollt many famous athletes and many great
teams but on the gridiron this season the Green \\'ave
seems [0 be rising to a new crest.
Coack Ted Cox is sending an undefeated Tulane team
into the Colgate game. On the whole southern front
just two big teams have stood up this far in the heavy
football firing. These teams are Alabama and Tulane.
There are Rose Bowl possibilities in the situation and
the whole south is following the fortunes of these teams.
The first to stumble is out. So the warning from the
old Creole quarter as Tulane set out for the North and
the Colgate encounter was: 'Vatch your step !
Tulane is a scoring team. Brought up in the Bernie
Bierman !;Chool, Coach Cox believes and teaches that a
vigorous attack is the best defense. In Monk Simons,
195·pound halfback, he has probably the most brilliant
ball·carrier in the land of palm and pine. He has been
the spearhead of the T ulane attack that has !!COred 124
points in six games against some of the best teams in the
South, including Georgia and Georgia Tech.
A southern team always wants to win against an out·
standing northern team, especially when the battle is in
northern territory. Intersectional rivalry adds color and
importance to any footb.'1ll game. Colgate certainly
stands out as one of the top teams along the northern
tier. That makes this game one of the great clashes of
the year from any p'?int of view. But add to that situation
the fact that r ulane is one of the few " big teams"
still undefeated and the football drama of this afternoon
takes on added excitement. I n a football way, the fate
of Alabama and Tulane on any given afternoon now is
a national issue. Tulane has a forward line that tips
the beam along the Zoo·pound level and the Green Wave
hopes to burst through the Colgate wall and roll over
into the scoring zone often enough to keep the record
clear and add another victory to the straight string with
which the visitors started out from the sunny South.
