THLANE UNIVERSITY
CLASS OF 2009: THE KATRINA CLASS
T-WAVE
Tulone University
Dear Classmates,
Before you enjoy the photos and memories contained in the following pages, we would like you
to take a few moments to reflect on all that you have accomplished within these past 4 years.
You have worked hard, learned more than you probably could have imagined, and, as evidenced
by the hundreds of pictures you submitted, had a great time along the way. We applaud you.
If you let your mind wander back to our white coat ceremony, you may recall the keynote address
that encouraged us to achieve our dreams by "standing on the shoulders of giants." Little did
we realize how soon this message would come into play. Just weeks later. Hurricane Katrina
uprooted our lives and threatened our dreams of becoming doctors. Yet, through a Tulane
alumnus and true "giant" of medicine. Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, we were able to continue our
education, our dreams, in Houston. Through the hard work and tenacity of our administration
and faculty, we were able to see what self-sacrifice can accomplish. And through all of us—our
diversity, our compassion, our fortitude—we were able to continue and build upon the unique
spirit of Tulane.
Indeed, although our medical school memories will always be influenced by the devastation of
Hurricane Katrina, the "Katrina Class" label is one we have worn with honor. Our school was
flooded with six feet of water, our hospitals severely damaged, our population depleted, yet we
stood by to play a role in Tulane's, and New Orleans', resurrection. With collective resilience in
the face of this upheaval, we channeled our energies towards the citizens of our city who were in
desperate need of healing, and we should feel fortunate that even our nascent medical knowledge
had a meaningful impact. On many levels, we have faced challenges head-on, looking to them
as opportunities for change, approaching them with great patience and pragmatism. Our class
has already endured much more than most graduating medical students and we should take pride
in the fact that we are bound by an experience greater than our common medical education.
Another "giant" of medicine. Sir William Osier, once wrote of student life: "The hardest
conviction to get into the mind of a beginner is that the education upon which he is engaged
is not a college course, not a medical course, but a life course, for which the work of a few years
under teachers is but a preparation." As we excitedly advance on to the challenges of finally
being a "doctor," we are indeed still in the preparation stages of a greater life course. However,
have faith in the fact that we have benefited from some of the most unique and invaluable of
life lessons. We will be better doctors because of it.
Thank you, Class of 2009, for an amazing 4 years. It has been a true honor and privilege to
compile this yearbook, and we have aimed to capture all the passion and joie de vivre that each
of you embodies.
Congratulations! We wish you nothing but the best in achieving
your dreams in all stages of your medical career.

Dear Class of 2009,
It gives us great pleasure to welcome you into the medical profession. You began your medical
school studies with us in August of 2005, and on August 29, we all became participants and
witnesses to one of this country's greatest natural disasters. Shortly after Katrina we made a
commitment to you: we would make sure you graduated on time from Tulane. In spite of what
seemed like insurmountable obstacles, you persevered, stuck with us, and came back to New
Orleans to help rebuild our city. For that, we are forever grateful. We are sure that you, like us,
learned what is truly important from this experience. We certainly learned what it means to be
patient, but more importantly, we learned what it means to be part of something much larger
than ourselves.
We are both very proud of what your class has achieved. Among your many accomplishments
include establishing free clinics in New Orleans, working to help rehabilitate substance abusers
and working with local school children to improve their scholastic performance. Many of you
have helped build homes and repair broken lives. Medicine is a service profession, and you
certainly have shown your dedication to serving others.
The promise that you all began with in 2005 was realized during the 2009 match, when you
were rewarded for your efforts with the opportunity to train in so many outstanding programs
and disciplines. Some of your best and brightest have chosen to stay with us at Tulane. Others
have chosen to go on to some of the best and most prestigious programs in the country. All of
you will carry that Tulane spirit and the Katrina experience to make you excellent physicians as
scores of Tulane students have done before you.
All of our paths will cross again, whether professionally or because we know what it means to
miss New Orleans. . .so we expect to be able to say "I knew that student when. ..."
Class of 2009, go out, practice your art, show your compassion, and make a difference! We wish
you success and don't forget us!
With our most sincere wishes for your successful futures,
Marc J. Kahn, MD
N. Kevin Krane, MD

I swear by Apollo the physician, and Asclepius, and Hygieia and Panacea
and all the gods and goddesses as my witnesses, that, according to my ability
and judgement, I will keep this Oath and this contract:
To hold him who taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents, to be
a partner in life with him, and to fulfill his needs when required; to look
upon his offspring as equals to my own siblings, and to teach them this art, if
they shall wish to learn it, without fee or contract; and that by the set rules,
lectures, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of
the art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to students bound by
this contract and having sworn this Oath to the law of medicine, but to no
others.
I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according
to my greatest ability and judgement, and 1 will do no harm or injustice to
them.
I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a
plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.
In purity and according to divine law will I carry out my life and my art.
I will not use the knife, even upon those suffering from stones, but 1 will
leave this to those who are trained in this craft.
Into whatever homes I go, I will enter them for the benefit of the sick, avoiding
any voluntary act of impropriety or corruption, including the seduction of
women or men, whether they are free men or slaves.
Whatever I see or hear in the lives of my patients, whether in connection with
my professional practice or not, which ought not to be spoken of outside, I
will keep secret, as considering all such things to be private.
So long as I maintain this Oath faithfully and without corruption, may it be
granted to me to partake of life fully and the practice of my art, gaining the
respect of all men for all time. However, should I transgress this Oath and
violate it, may the opposite be my fate.

In Memoriam
Dr. Michael E. DeBakey
September 7, 1908 - July 12, 2008
Dr. DeBakey was one of the most revered physicians of our time and has been
called "the greatest surgeon of the 20**^ century." After being in Houston for half a
century, he immediately came to the aid of his alma mater following Hurricane
Katrina. Dr. DeBakey, at age 97, personally arrived to support and welcome us on
our first day at Baylor. The DeBakey Foundation also donated funds to Baylor to
cover expenses incurred by hosting Tulane following the storm.
Thank you, Dr. DeBakey, for a lifetime of service and invention and for being a role
model for generations of medical students.

2^^K We Innovate Healthcare
^ From Research
. to Real Life
We all dream ofdoing big things.
Solving importantproblems.
Making a difference. Improving lives.
Transforming these dreams
into reality requires ambition,
creativity, and a company like ours to
help put all the elements together.
Roche is a leader in preventing, diagnosing and treating
disease, enhancing the quality of life for everyone.
We invest almost $5 billion a year in innovative research,
and our capabilities combine traditional biomedical
science with the latest advances in biotechnology,
genetics and genomics. Our investment in research has
led to the introductions of important new medicines for
osteoporosis and flu. And our current pipeline includes
potential advances for treating cancer, diabetes, arthritis
and hepatitis C.
Few companies possess the global strength in both
diagnostics and therapeutics that Roche enjoys.
By forging closer links between diagnosis and
treatment, we're leading the way to a new dimension
in healthcare-individualized medicine. This approach
identifies the best treatment for a specific
individual.
And since we understand that every
individual is unique, we strive to ensure
a diverse workplace. Roche encourages
creativity and embraces differences in talent,
education, work style, lifestyle and culture.
Arthritis, cancer, diabetes, hepatitis, HIV/
AIDS, influenza, nervous system disorders
and osteoporosis - just some of the real life
issues Roche is focusing on and providing
solutions for.

Come visit Houma, Louisiana
and discover the many assets which make this a special place to live and work.
We have abundant natural resources, from our scenic bayous to our prolific
seafood and offshore mineral resources. Houma enjoys a very low
unemployment rate due to the strength of natural gas, oil, agriculture,
restaurant, retail and fabrication industries. The quality of healthcare services
available in Terrebonne Parish is among the best in the country. We have
approximately 80,000 residents, with 110,000 total residents including
surrounding communities... and we're growing. We're in close proximity to
everything: only 57 miles southwest of New Orleans and 20 miles to Nicholls
State University! Our Cajun Culture is one of our national treasures (along
with our food) and our fishing and sporting opportunities are legendary.
Houma is just a melting pot of friendly, caring people with much to offer.
Come and discover for yourself why this is such a special and unique corner
of the world. We invite you to stay for a while...even for a lifetime.
