IF WE FOLLOWED THE FASHION
IN DEDICATIONS. WE WOULD
DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO OUR
SEVEREST CRITIC OR OUR EVER-WILLING
FRIEND. BUT YOU ARE
SOMETHING MORE THAN A
CRITIC AND A FRIEND. AND IF
WE SPEAK OF YOU ONLY AS A
FRIEND OR CRITIC OF THE STU-DENTS.
WE WOULD BE TAKING
NO ACCOUNT OF YOUR GREATER
IMPORTANCE AS AN AUTHOR.
AND. THEREFORE. THE BOARD
OF EDITORS OF THE 1918 JAMBA-LAYA
DEDICATE THIS VOLUME
TO YOU. DR. PIERCE BUTLER.
DEAN OF THE GRADUATE DE-PARTMENT.
AND PROFESSOR OF
ENGLISH LITERATURE AT NEW-COMB

BRANDT V. B. DIXON, A.M., LL.B.
PRESIDENT OF NEWCOMB COLLEGE.
(22)
1918 Class Poem
What iho "leaving" rhyme with "grieving"?
What iho "morrow" rhyme with "sorrow"?
We of '18 no sad sentiments
From former classes borrow.
Tho "depart" and "achmg heart"
Make the couplet a temptation;
Spite of "college" and "knowledge,"
Wc declare emancipation.
i" or a song too sad for words
h for silence worse than singing.
And our love for Newcomb deeper far
Than suits the p3:an*s ringing.
From thy memory, dear Newcomb,
Ne'er thn thought of us dissever
:
We've done our best for four long years,
And shall be faithful ever.

1919 Class Poem
"Adomnlra Parala" is a motto good and true
—
Meant for Nineteen Nineteen as well as me and you.
Prepared for work, prepared for play, prepared for everything,
"Adomnia Parata" is the message that we bring.
If I were to spend my lime in search of high praise
My efforts would be futile; for m these troubled days
The class which stands ready to heed each college call
—
Which is prepared for everything—that's the finest class of all.

Newcomb 1920 Class Poem
In the city of cities,
In the stale of all slates,
In God's own country I stand;
I live for all knowledge,
I'm called Newcomb College,
I'm known all over the land.
I've watched many people,
I've learned many things,
I've lived and I've loved and had plenty;
But the older I grow
The more joys I know;
Now my prime joy's the class that's called "Twenty.
Thai's a great class, my star class;
They're the pride of my heart.
I'm partial, I'll have to admit.
They play such good ball;
Oh, they're wmners—that s all
And ihey have so much spuit and grit.
They're Sophomores this year;
In all branches they shine.
All those girls are so charming, so dapper!
Have you heard ihe "Soph" band?
Nol a "Soph" will be canned;
Why, ihey all deserve Phi Beta Kappa!
But the reason I love
The Sophomore class.
And prefer them above all the rest,'
Is because their affection
Is in my direction
—
The Sophomore class loves me best.
LuDA Reynolds.

Your Flag and My Flag
Your flag and my flag, and how it flies today;
In your land and my land, and half a world away.
Ro3e-red and blood-red, the stripes forever gleam;
Snow-white and soul-white, the good forefather's dream.
Sky-blue and true-blue, with stars that shine aright,
A gloried guidon of the day, a shelter through the night.
Your flag and my flag, and, oh! how much it holds;
Your land and my land, secure within its folds.
Your heart and my heart beat faster at its sight;
Sun-kissed and wind-tossed, the red and blue and while.
The one flag, the great flag, the flag for me and you,
Glorified all else besides, the red and white and blue.

S we now press forward, nearing the final goal for which
we have striven with ever-increasing zeal, and to which we
have often looked up in wondering admiration, we falter
in our steps, anxious to be "up and doing," yet clinging
to our Alma Mater with an ever-tightening grasp.
Must we here recount oui great achievements of the
past four years, as the vainglorious do, trusting not that
the greatness of our deeds will perpetuate them? Must
we tell you, dear reader, where to look for genius and, perhaps, see
you turn away greatly disappointed in not finding our works in every
hall, our names on every tongue? We are confident in our accom-plishments
; their greatness shall preserve them.
As Freshmen, we were obsessed with vain pride. Self-impor-tance
persisted through our Sophomore days. As serious Juniors and
Seniors, we have at last realized that the world is not patiently waiting
for us. We must e.xhibit our value.
Although we leave its halls, and even though we say "farewell"
to our dear Tulane, we shall be with hsr always in spirit, sometimes
in reality. Our common interest is in her welfare. Our allegiance is
fi"st, to our country, and secondly, to our Alma Mater.

HE moon of success was high in the heavens when they started out, and
the road ahead was bathed in silvery sheen which obliterated the dark
places. There were fifty-five of them when the little band began to clear
a passage through a trackless forest. The trees had to be cut and the
steps forward analyzed; but these were operations which in the end would
make the sought-for land more worthy of appreciation.
When the silvery road faded into a trackless barrier some became dis-heartened,
but the rest, armed with implements to achieve, to cut away, to
reach the promised land, clenched their fists and bodily determined to succeed, and with
courageousness, untiring energy, loyalty, co-operation and dogged perseverance, they grap-pled
the obstacles of obstruction.
The forest woodland echoed with the sound of their progress. The trees quivered and
fell en masse. The dense undergrowth sometimes offered persistent opposition, but the
"never-give-up" strokes of untiring energy made it succumb; and then the pioneers slowly
pushed forward to encounter the denser and more difficult parts where the moon of suc-cess
could not penetrate. "The harder the accomplishment, the greater the revard,"
reverberated in their brains.
And now that only one-fourth of that trackless forest remains to be traversed before
the vari-colored land of ultimate goal is reached, the few that have survived glimpse
the moon of success now and then as a stray beam gilds the tops of the forest trees on a
perfect night.
The little band of thirteen now gather together and animatedly talk of their comrades
who have left them; of those who have fallen out because the struggle proved too great;
of those who had fire in their veins for adventures more exciting, who buckled on armor
and sailed over high seas to dispute the claims of a man who measures his success by
the hundreds of lives daily sacrificed upon the altar of his ambition. Lastly, they discuss
that land—that cloudless land—which holds the fruits of their accomplishment; and, with
smiles, they picture the time when they will have arrived at the base of the pyramid that
would lead to their pinnacle of success.
Then the moon which had so brightly shone for them when they started out—that
same moon which had sent a ray of encouragement when they plodded wearily on, won-dering
if it were all worth it—will shower soft radiance upon them, and if sometimes it
may pass behind black clouds, will again reappear to point out the right direction.
Above all, that trackless forest will be carven in their minds as a thing to love forever.
Edward R. Gschwind, Historian.

Sophomore Arts and Sciences Class History
E are the Class of 1920. Our pictures are on the op-posite
page. We hope, kind readers, that you will enjoy
this glimpse of us; for you must realize that it is, indeed,
a rare opportunity which enable you to look upon so much
mtelligence grouped together on one sheet of paper.
When we were Freshmen we accomplished a great
many things. Incidentally, we pulled the Sophomores
through the pond, beat them in debate and on the track.
One of our class won the Carnot Debating Medal and the Glendy
Burke Medal for Oratory, the first time that this has ever been done
by a Freshman in the history of Tulane University. Another won
the Glendy Burke Medal for English essay. We did equally well
in athletics, being well represented on Tulane's football, basketball, and
track teams.
So far in our Sophomore year, we have defeated the Freshmen in
the tug-of-war and in the wrestling, and have played them a tie game
in football. Again, the Carnot Medal has been won by a member of
the Class of 1 920. Two of us are 'Varsity debaters, and the honor
of having a classmate as captain of the football team is also ours.
In a brief year and a half we have attained these honors. But if,
as historian, I may be permitted to intrude, you must believe me when
I say that as a class we do not value them. Already we have come
to feel the spirit of old Tulane. The friendships we have formed and
are forming are dear to us. We will always be loyal to our class, to
our classmates, and, above all, to our University.
Historian.

Freshman Arts and Sciences Class History
S merely a writer of Freshman History, my work would
be ended before it had begun; but I must be more than
that; I must foretell the future of the Freshman Class.
We have contended thrice with the Sophomores.
Twice we were defeated, and once we were tied. The
Sophomors gloat over their victories, while we are not
daunted over our defeats—in fact, we even laugh with
them. It was fun when we were pulled through the
pond in Audubon Park. We are not made of sugar; water won't
melt us. Again, who would expect us to outmatch the Sophomores
at wrestling—Sophomores who had a year's training, while we have
had none? Then, when it came to football, they held us scoreless.
We admit they did well.
Now let us come to the future. Are we gomg to sit and mope over
our defeats? No; not we. We have learned that we will have to
stick together in order to accomplish anything, and we are going to
do it. As for individual merit, we have it, as was well shown by the
number of players that we put upon the 'Varsity football team, and,
from present indications, we will do equally well upon the track.
Now, we have one failing. We do not know enough. We are
aware of that fact, and for that reason we wear little green caps.
These caps aid us to think, and in a short while we will know as much
as the Sophomores, or, at least, some of them.
Our greatest task lies in the making of a history for ourselves. We
have the ability, the determination, and the help of the Faculty. The
rest is merely a matter of time.
A. B. Cameron.

Junior Technology Class History
F the many classes that pass through our University, there
are always one or two that stand out conspicuously; and
the Tech Class of 1919 is one of them.
Former issues of this popular journal bear evidence of
this very potent fact, but for the benefit of our new sub-scribers
we shall briefly enumerate a few of their accom-plishments.
As Freshmen, they entered every contest with a de-termination
to win, and were crowned with VICTORY at the end of
their ''greencap" reign." Unlike most victors in interclass contests,
they did not win sixty per cent of the various competitions, but all of
them. And so the Class numerals, 1919, were painted upon the his-torical
old tank on the campus.
Returning, as Sophomores, the following fall, we find their ranks
sadly depleted, for several of their best men did not get back.
But, although few in number, yet that same old spirit remained, and
they were again victorious in the contests with the Freshmen. One
glance at the tank is evidence of this fact. As two years is the longest
period that class numbers can remain upon the tank, the now famous
1919 will soon be removed ; but if four years were made the maximum,
we feel confident that this class would have maintained their numbers
throughout their sojourn at college.
The attainments of this Class have not been restricted to athletics
only, for their class standing in other work is among the best on record.
While each and every member of this Class has an individuality all his
own, and we would like to mention same, yet our space is limited, and
we must be content with describing them as a whole.
In short, they are a group of energetic and congenial young fellows,
admired by the Freshmen, respected by the Sophomores, and highly re-garded
by the Seniors.
Alex S. Sonntagg, Hislorian.

Class of 1920
A holy and a haunted ground! when we
Were Sophomores behind this lusly day
Two armies battled in the prime of lime.
A Freshman horde of Xere's warring sons
Swept o'er the plams of Tulane, like the dust
Before the day dissolves it mto clay.
A tragic few of real men of the earth
Stepped forth; the earth of man stood still
To welcome Sophomores on their hallowed field.
Two armies battled on the sea and land
And triumphed one; and one absorbed the filth
Of mild October's waters—but the last
Man deems the Freshman and the last
A sponge that holds defeat, the world and mire.
And on the land a Freshman army swept
The rugged floors, the floors of rugs and dust
Beneath the pow'rs of wrestling Sophomores.
A Sophomore army occupied the field
To see the captive Freshmen loss the ball
And demonslrate the footwork of the pa3t.
This is a holy and a haunted ground:
The man of triumph struts about like day
Before the clouds have marred its lofty brow.
In abject solitude a Freshman treads:
His was defeat eternal; and like night
Creeps silently ere day has entered in.

History of Freshman Technology Class
HE history of the Technology Class of 1921 is like that of
the whole world; it is being made, and thought it has not pro-gressed
to a very advanced state, when it is looked back upon,
it presents a very bright and prosperous past. From the very
day upon which we went through with the ceremonies of
matriculation to the present time, we "wearers of the green"
have exhibited an abundant supply of both class and school
spirit. Scarcely has there been an activity in the University in
which the 1 92 I Technology Class has not figured prominently.
Our tug-of-war contest, though not won by us, was the result of advan-tage
being taken of our kind-heartedness. We were told that among the
heavers for the Soph, bunch there were some who had recently recovered
from pneumonia, and others who were so deathly afraid of water that if
they should get wet they would die. Again, we were told that the park
authorities did not want the pond dredged with Sophs., as they were very
particular about what was used to dredge this body of water. Therefore,
as a result of these existing circumstances, no Sophs, died, and a very select
dredge was used on the pond.
As far as the wrestling is concerned, it can truthfully be said that we
put up a good fight, and that our defeat, by a small margin, was due only
to the efficiency of Professor Hanson as a coach.
In the last contest, however, we had become to some extent trained our-selves,
and put up a fight on the gridiron which resulted in a scoreless tie.
This, the class that has furnished men for various teams, notably the Varsity
football team, which was the first in fourteen years to defeat our annual
opponents in the ''Turkey Day" game, has come to a point where they are
squal to the Sophs, and, gentle reader, in the remaining contests just watch
us go "over the top."
Oh, yes—just to give a little hint as to our scholarship—our lettering in
our mechanical drawing work has come up to such a grade of excellence that
it has been wished by the Dean himself that even the Seniors could do as
well. Indeed, we intend putting this good work to some practical use.
Again, I say, gentle reader, watch us, and you will see this application put,
not upon the sidewalks and buildings, but upon the tank in the form of a
large 1921. HISTORIAN.

History of the Senior Law Class
NSPIRED by \isions of August Aasizes, cowering criminals,
solemn sentences and fabulous fees, the Class of 1918 emerged
from obscurity and entered the claesic portals of Tulane Law
School away back in the halcyon days of September, 1915.
Through sunshine and shadow, through the ple^.:ai.t periods of
Judge Foster's lectures, through the darkest labyrinth of St.
John's final inquisition, undismayed by the meretricious bsck-onings
of pleasure, the clsss, for three long years, has pursued
the Law, that Jealous Mistress, who, unlike Cassandra, does not babble her
oracles in the popular ear, but rather, like the priestess Pythia. sits demurely
in her temple and opens her prescient lips only to those who seek her there.
Be it remembered that in spite of the distracting influence of "penny ante"
and reticence of Ginsburg, the class aforesaid, then and there, with force and
arms, made a felonious attempt to extract knowledge from the vast mines of
legal erudition which are so faithfully guarded by Justinian, Demolombe,
Pothier, Blackstone and our Lord Coke.
To presage whether these efforts will be requited ; whether the judge's
ermine, the barrister's robes, or the senatorial toga will reward the lucubra-tions
of this remarkable class would be to prophesy. As a historian, we are
estopped from usurping the functions of a seer. Whether the class will re-ligiously
adhere to the principle of stare decisis, or become a great creative,
constructive force at the bar, on the bench and in the halls of Congress, can
only be answered when, through the expiration of time, wc are assimilated
into the warp and woof of the ancient and honorable legal profession.
The record of the Class of '18 warrants the prediction that if, peradvcn-turc,
any of its members should hear the clarion call of the populace for public
office, that member would eschew the idle babblings of the demagogue as
well as appeals to maudlin sentimentality, and seek only the popularity which,
in the words of Lord Mansfield, "follow the performance oh-.irtuous deeds."

First Year Law Class History
HS a usual thing, there is very httle to write about a first
year Law class, but our class has been very different in
this respect, mainly due to the very interesting Moot
Court introduced by Professor Turck. These cases have
been ably argued by future Justices of the Supreme Bench,
District Attorneys and able Criminal lawyers. Such men
as "Feet" Talbot and Hawkins, J., handed down never-to-
be-forgotten decisions. After trial, judgment and ex-ecution
of the prisoner, post mortems were held. The body would be
resurrected, retried and reconvicted or released a half dozen times. At
last the poor fellow would become so disgusted at having to jump m
and out of his coffin that he would get "peeved," use some vigorous
language, and disappear, doubtless preferring the warmer climate below
to our heated discussions.
Then the Mid Term examinations drew near. The Library, usually
silent and deserted, now began to hum like a beehive, and its atmosphere
became thick with the dust blown from the tops of leather-covered vol-umes.
Lines of care developed on many youthful countenances, and
the Goddess of Mirth (if there is one) left for parts unknown. Ex-aminations
passed (not all of them, I fear), a deep and heartfelt sigh
went up to the heavens as a signal to the goddess to return, and every-body
took a holiday.
In all college activities, this class has shown to advantage. There
are letter men in football and on the track, editors of the "Weekly,"
captains and lieutenants in the military organization, and, above all,
we are honored by having two members of the fair sex with us.
Historian.

Sophomore Medical Class Hi^ory
wo years ago we entered the stately halls of Tulane Uni-versity,
imbued with the spirit of Aesculapius, and swore
a "mighty oath," not unlike that of our famous prede-cessor,
Hippocrates ; resolved to give the medical profes-sion
the benefit of our vast and marvelous knowledge.
During this great interim, some departed from our
ranks for good, while others sojourned for a week or
more as "buck privates" in various training camps, due
to the selective draft law. With a little good maneuvering, these men
were soon back with us, bearing the title, "Private," in M. E. R. C.
We find ourselves considerably advanced on the road to maturity,
with our youthful enthusiasm somewhat changed to a conservative line
of thought, directed along more appropriate and rational channels. The
difficulties of this year were numerous, with many complicated subjects
and intricate problems to master—e. g., physiology; but we had by
this time become sturdy soldiers, and by constant attention to duty, we
were able to overcome them with credit to ourselves and satisfaction to
our professors. RoY E. Delahoussaye, Historian.
P. S.—We take this means of thanking some unknown American
citizen, a resident of New Orleans, for its timely arrival about 9 a. m.
March 4. Sorry I don't know whether its name is "Bill" or "Mary
Jane." This information will be gladly furnished by our Professor
of Minor Surgery.

Freshmen Medical Class History
ULANE MEDICAL SCHOOL opened wide her portals in 1834, with
Registrar Beilfield at the desk grabbing the cash, and the greatest body of
men that ever slipped two hundred bones apiece into the outstretched palm
of old Oswald is about to complete the work of the Freshman year.
We know that we're the best, because great men are always forced to
fight opposition and criticism as they journey through life. It is only
"The Most Mediocre" that never encounter resistance. Nobody worries
about them.
We need no paid press agents to boost our fame. The professors were so enthused
over our ability that they would break into their lectures to tell of our greatness. They
knew that we were there. Such is the result of fame. Some of our work was so admired
that it was framed without solicitation on our part, and now adorns the walls of Anatomy
Hall. May next year's class gaze upon it and admire the work—not the framing.
We've seen some professors m a state of considerable anger, but that was due to
their having to sit up nights and read in order to keep up with our vast supply of
knowledge. We forgive them for their anger and jealousies. All famous people have
envious admirers.
Even the type of professors that was born to hate a Freshman admitted that we
were driven more intensely than any preceding class, due to changes m schedule and
other matters beyond our control. But we were on the job. Even the conservation
of coal did not keep us from work. We were in class when the rooms were so cold that
our very "BRAINS WERE FROZEN." Some of us missed roll call, but after the
close of the session—when we get a little time to attend to our personal wants—we're
going to ask the "Almighty Father" to forgive us for having committed so dreadful a sin.
We have ranked first in class spirit, and stuck together through all differences. In
protecting ourselves from things unreasonable, we always used "Our-God-Given-Gift-of-
Reason."
Dear Professors and Slave Drivers: For services rendered, we thank you. If our
greatness made it impossible for your irratibilities to be held in check, we wonder what
will happen next year; because we'll be still greater and a heluva lot better as Sophomores.

WALLACE WOOD, JR., D.D.S.
DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY
(138)
History of Senior Dental Class
HERE are many influences which determine a young man's
choice of a Hfe profession. This choice is made after an
exhaustive analysis of all the factors which necessarily enter
into the making of this decision—a decision which marks an
epoch in the life of every professional man.
During the months, and perhaps years, preceding Sep-tember,
1915, there were twenty-seven young men whose tastes,
hopes and aspirations led them to the choice of dentistry as
their life profession.
So, in September, 1915, in pursuance of that choice, these men,
coming from different States, as well as two foreign countries, assembled at
New Orleans and matriculated in the Dental Department of Tulane Uni-versity.
Under the stress of hard study and exacting technical work, our lines
have at times been bent, and we have occasionally suffered a loss, but at no
time have our lines been permanently broken. On the contrary, we have
constantly pushed forward, receiving two splendid recruits in our Senior year,
until we have finally achieved the initial success of our professional study
—
namely, the properly treated, engraved and signed "sheepskin."
We, as a class, do not pose as the reservoir of all knowledge pertaining
to the profession of dentistry, but we believe that among our ranks are men
who will reflect credit upon our v/orthy professors—man who will be an
honor to our beloved Alma Mater, and men who will be an honor to the
profession. We take pride in noting the fact that a large majority of our
class have already offered their services to our Government, and are now
members of the Enlisted Medical Reserve Corps, and hope soon to be in
active service of our country to help maintain and increase the efficiency of
our fighting forces by giving scientific dental treatment.

Senior Pharmacy Class History
E belong to the "get through quick" crowd, because our course is a two-years
one. As Juniors we started out eight strong, but now four remain, and
are half and half as regards dresses and trousers. Louisiana and Texas
are the States represented, and this representation is also half and half,
as one boy and one girl come from Texas and the others from Louisiana.
But our professors have a habit of saying seventy-five per cent of the class
is present when only the two girls show up.
Our friends. Mack, or, better known to some as "My Coon," is a
fellow that has a way all his own, for he comes and goes when he feels
like it. When with us he makes us feel his presence, for it is "I" on
every crook and turn; he walks around with much the same air as a peacock; however,
he would put to shame the peacock if he ever got a glimpse of him. Notwithstanding this
fact, Mack is a dandy good sport, for he takes his girl riding in her dad's machine.
Now, Brother Jackson—who has various and sundry other names, but this one
seems to stick best—is our Lone Star girl. She has temper for the entire class, and is
made up of moods. She says and does what she thinks, and the class sometimes wonders
what to expect, and just where she will "break out" next. Her redeeming characteristic
is that of looking out for the entire class. She is just like a hen with an only chick, for,
even though she "chews the rag" with her own chick, she does not tolerate any abuse
of it on the part of others.
"Old Reliable" Woodford is another Lone Star specimen. He is always seen, but
seldom heard. Brother Jackson did manage to create a little "get back" in him when
she said a rubber stopper was but a stopper, but a cork was not a stopper. "Old Relia-ble"
does not wear a smile, but he always looks so pleasant that it almost makes him
good-looking. He is a perfect mimic, for he conducts our weekly quiz in such a manner
that we could shut our eyes and imagine it was Dr. Bethea.
Last, but not least, is our Cousin-cousin (Marie). Oh, yes, she is least in size,
but otherwise she is the biggest member of the class. Tenacity! Well, yes—she has the
bulldog sort, for, once starting a thing, she never lets go until it has been accomplished
to the satisfaction of all. Now, we all ought to have known (but we did not), that
an ounce is the name in imperial or U. S. wine measure, but even now Cousin-cousin is
told to make up two ounces (imperial measure) of some solution she has to think it over
for a while, for "imperial" strikes as something foreign. Historian.

In the Spring the young man's fancy
Lightly turns to thoughts of Huns,
While he wades from Ypres to Nancy,
Heedless of the shotted guns

Dropping thoughts of Love and Maytime,
Dropping dreams of Cupid's spell
