The Newcomb Relief Unit
^ HEN, during ihe spring of 1918, occasional alumnae and sludenls w^s'ied aloud ihat
Newcomb might be represented in war work in some definite and individual way, those
who heard ihcm echoed ihc wish, li;tle dreaming that the w nter of 1919 would find
a unit organized and financed by the College, a:li ely at wo:k in I aly and in Frantc.
And those of us who worked to send thai unit abroad somelin:cs wonder if we arc
not still dreaming.
To Dr. DinWiddic, the President of ihe University, goes the credit for first sU3ges:ing that oar \ ague
wishes might actually be realized. It was in June that he took up the mailer wilh :h; Alumnae Presi-dent,
Miss Anna Many. Members of the Alumnae were consjlted, and waxed enthusiastic at once.
And the Red Cross gladly accepted the offer of a sf If-linanced unit of some ten ir.enbes to do recon-struction
work in devastated France. In July the first meeting was held, team captains were ap-pointed,
and work was actively begun. At the end of August it was possib'e to repo.-t that cash and
pledges were enough to justify our belief that ihc unit was an accCTpllihed fart. Th?re were few very
large contributions, either from the Alumnae themselves, or from outsiders; but the response was over-whelmingly
cordial and overwhelmingly generous, and we can say that the Newcomb Unit is really
a Newcomb Unit, suppoitcd, not by a few people, but by the great body of Alumnae and students of the
College.
Applications for ser'.ice, as might be expe^-ted. poured in, and the taik of s:lectio.i was a difficult
one. In reaching a decision as to the constitution of the Unit, many thingi were con-idered: good
health and enduiance, a definite training in things likely to be of service, a knowledge of Freneh, and
—
though it was ne-.er the first consideration —the amount of money the applicant could herself supply
Originally ten members were selected circumstances later compelled one or ;wo wi hdiawals and suh-
•lilulions, and the list now stands: Caroline Richaidson, '95, director; Anna Many, 07, business
manager; Edna Danziger, '07; Celeste Eshleman, 06; Mary Palfrey, '09; Edih Dupre, '00; Marion
Monroe, '10, and Nettie Barnwell, '09.
The Unit members began iheir training at once, and they learned evcrythinj, f.o.n first aid to auto-mechanirs;
from agricultural theories to cooking. They were vaccinated and inoculated. They read
and talked Fiench. And they piovided themselves with all ihinvs that kindly fr cnls sug'jstcd as nec-cssaiy
for one about to go overseas.
Then came the armistice, and a few days after the armistice came the annoan:ement from tie Red
Cross that it could send no more units for service abroad. The Newcomb Unit forthwith made appli-cation
to the Y. M. C. A. authorities, and was accepted at once, and on I'le night of December 15,
they left for New 'I'ork. There, so their stoiies go, they worked from seven in the morning until all
hours of the night, filling in gaps in their cduca'ion, as it were, and, between tim-s. doin;? canteen wok
to get their hand) in. And they passed more physical examination i.
On the eighth of January they sailed aboard the Carmania, wi h a motor ccrps un t, and uni's fiom
Welleiley and Bryn Mawr. Mrs. Ccoige R. Vincent, of Chicago, was the head of the four units, and
Newcomb is more than proud that Anna Many was business manager and Misi Caroline Richardson
was one of the heads of the parly. It lends arsuranee to what one of the Unit wroe, t'lat Newcomb
has never been to advertised in its life.
As yet we ha e only the larest oullinrs of what happened after th.il. W> kno v t'lal the stay in
England was biief, that Paris wai reached Ue in January, and that the Unit was al once split up and
put to work. Edith f)upre and Anna Many are in Rome; Celese Eshleman and Maiion Monroe arc
in St, Nazaire; Mollie Palfrey, Nettie Barnwell and l-.dna Danziger are doinj c*-ilrcn wmk in Bresl;
and Caroline Richardson is on special duty in Paris.
And because these things are so, we of Newcomb frrl llwil wr are doing ai a bodv. our share in
bringing peace and sanity back to a war-loin woild, and we nie ginteful to those of us who had the
vision and the courage to dream the dream that all of us have been given the opportunity to realize.

THE JAMBALA YA
Newcomb Senior Class History
S^'^^i'S© T the end of of the Senior year it is natural to look back and to try to see
what ycu have done for the college in your four years, and then to take
a sad farewell.
We will tr.ke our farewell first and then recount our accomplishments.
We are not very sad at leaving New Newcomb, for we are not leaving
behind any memories of favorite spots or cherished customs. Some of us who love water
may miss the pond, that is, the campus. A few who like animals may, in the future,
sigh for the numerous iron dogs, who haunt the campus and seek food in the various
wcstebaskets. As it appears, the cafeteria is the only spot we may regret, not Thomp-son's
or Child's can ever take its place. But there is no shady place, no chapel steps,
no Arcade to make us wish to come back to New Newcomb. Everything seems so
public. The little galleries in front of the dormitory are entirely open to view. If you
sit on the one nearest Dixon Hall you are disturbed by noises and talk; if you sit on the
one nearest Broadway all the p;ople in the street cars have a good time leaning out the
windows and staring. The bench outside the Psychology room has possibilities, and I
suppose in time it will be moved away because we might disturb the lectures. Our chapel
—say no more.
We may not have accomplished much in athletics, due to the fact that a number of
cur good plcyers have gotten married off. But athletics don't live on after a class has
gone. Our May Day will; at least we think so, for it surely was well done. Also
we won the Freshman-Sophomore debate both years, and with our class, Greek, as an
elective, came to life after a year or two's burial. Also we have been an undivided
class, no factions, all working together for the college. We won't spill any high-flown
sentiments about ourselves, but we have been fair and square to the college.
We may not feel sorry at leaving New Newcomb, but we are sorry to leave what it
stands for.
It will be just like us human people to come back here, some tim^ in the future, to
look at the green terraces, the walks shaded by the oaks we planted on the first Arbor
Day Nwcomb ever had, and to say, "A beautiful place; makes the old one look
shabby, doesn't it?"

When the last class has gone out fiom Newcomb,

The Souls thai have made life worth while.
Will ihe Soul of Ncwcomb's Class 1 wcnly see Glory
—
Know Gods smile?
In the heavenly couiU hi wuh glory.
Hung with rainbows, and paved with the stars.
Where the hearts of fair flowers blossom.
Where God lives, and no evil mars.
W'llI ihc Soul of the Class Nineteen Twenty

A Spirit resplendent wilh virtue.
In whom every peifecl act lies?

There came the Newcomb Spirit,

Sophomoie Class Poem
So we have triumphed through the year,
The Sophomores of 21.
Through budding spring and winter drear,
They've known our power, everyone.
The Sophomores of 21
Have fanned these halls with merriment,
And they have worn the ohve green.
And we have triumphed; we have won.
And you remember in those days.
You Sophomores of 21
Stern were our courses; stern the ways,
And we have triumphed, everyone.
The Sophomores of 21
Have tuned old Newcomb for applause,
.'Xnd they all conquered, still must praise,
/\nd we ha-.e triumphed; we have won.

"The Wearin' o' the Green'
^^^^^^% URROUNDED by the delightful perfumes of fresh paint and new cement,
the Class of '22 began its brilliant career as the first Freshman Class to
enter "New Newcomb. "
Our entrance into the college was unaccompanied by that form of
hazing which is usually so much in use—the practice of misdirecting poor,
innocent, unsuspecting, little Freshmen. Sophomores. Juniors ar.d even (speak softly!)
those reverend Seniors were as bewildered as the new class. Alma Mater's youngest
child took her "family introductions" with a spirit which will characterize her whole four
years. On a certain day during the first "flu" epidemic, the dormitory Freshmen were
gently urged by persuasive Sophomores to wear their dresses hind part before. 1 he
younger class complied with the older's wishes, but its throat was in no wise affected,
for it rnsvvcred the Sophomore challenges with many "peppy " yells. I he reversing of
garments must have been accompanied by some like movement of the eyes, for when
those fearful creatures, the Sophomores, forced lis to march backward into assembly,
our course was so true that the spectators broke forth into loud applause.
In our school activities we rally to our standard. We came out on top in the U. W. W.
drive, and we will be ever ready to assume our proper obligation. But we are shrink-ing
Molels, and would not have you think we do not pay homage for our present success
where homage is due. With such a type of "big sister" as it has been each Freshman's
luck to possess, strange 'twould be, indeed, if we acquired no fame.
Oh, truly, the f' reshmcn carry many laurels. Hiil ihe greatest and most treasured
of these is the "little green cap." Poor Sophomore.;, how could they realize what an
honor they were doing us, by inaugurating in our class this new form of headgear. Dr.
Dixon has immortalized "the green cap" r.nd we, as the first class to don it. share in
the reflection of its glory. May Newcomb ever be proud of '22—the first clas.> to under-take
"The Wearin' o' the Green." Eli:anor Lf. Blanc.

The Curtain Drawn
HE evening sun, trembling on the window sill, kisses to bloodredness the
roses of the room. Fate, with eyes as bright as bubbles in a running pool,
thrusts the golden cup above her—pure golden.
A knock upon the door is heard; and e'er she tiptoes o'er the floor,
some five and fifty mortals rush in and cry, "A drink, drink—we crave
a drink!"
And when the wine—bitter wine—from the golden cup is quaffed, and twilight,
like the conqueror he is, subdues the fading shafts of sun, they rush out, down the road
in spirits high.
I hree Junes have watched the roses come and go; three Junes have seen the sun upon
the sill. And now so bright it shines, and throws a rainbow ray o'er Fate and makes
brighter still the pure gold cup.
Once more the knock as of the three Junes passed; once more she softly tiptoes to
the door; once more before her stand the mortals, not five and fifty—but eleven.
Her face shines brighter than the evening sun, as up she holds the cup, with eyes all
fire: "The others, where are they?" she cries, "who one time came and now forsake
me so—my cup of learning?"
"Some drank too deep!" cries one, "and drunk with a conceit that made this cup
quite shallow, thought life held greater things than knowledge ever did. The cup was
blight, but study far too hard."
"And others!" cried another, "they have drunk the wine, but found that though
it sparkled, 'twas not sweet. That life was far too short and worries far loo great to
make a tempest of your brain when tranquility can reign."
A third, with twinkle of the soldier in his eyes, spoke loud: "Forget not those who
quaffed a hearty drink, O Fate, and saw its worth, but rushed on to the field where red
and white and blue o'er chaos reigned."
"The cup! The cup!" the eleven cry. "A drink—the last one!"
Holding them with gentle touch: "No," she says, "not last, but first. Thrice was
drained the cup, but to its brim it's filled again. Not the last, but the first; all life is but
a lesson and each day a page; each minute holds a greater truth than you surmise."
When twilight conquers the golden rays of sun. Fate up and speaks: "Drink, drink
deep, a well deserving drink—'tis sweet, not bitter now."
Dusk; then night; stars bright. Etched in the door\vay of her rosied home, she stands.
1 he soft padding of feet o'er graveled road.
E'er eleven high strung hearts beat fast retreat with eager feet, her arms above her
head she throws and cries:
"l-^emcmbcr e'er your Alma Mater."
"Kcmember," ihcy fling back, "can one forget the things one loves!"

Junior Arts and Science History
T the time of writing, it is understood that the Student Council is con-sidering
a plan to save Tuiane from a repetition of the humiliation that
it is now undergoing. Daily letters are being received from other univer-sities
and alumni of I ulane requesting an explanation of what is appar-ently
the greatest stain on the record of the University. The Board of
Administrators has attempted to prevent the story from circulating, but it could not sup-press
all reports of such a lamentable affair, as it must appear to an ignorant public.
That all may know why Tuiane is now in such great distress, and, also, to give to
the great American public a true explanation, this account, the first statement authorized
for publication, is written. The cause of it all is this: Nineteen-twenly has never been
on the tank. The greatness of the greatest class in the history of Tuiane has failed to be
recognized by Tulane's only means of honoring the classes of which she is especially
proud. What can be the cause? Who is at fault? To exhonerate the University,
the Class of 1920 authorizes the publication of the true explanation.
While Freshmen, it decided to make an experiment in the interest of science. It
would prove that real worth will always be eventually recognized and honored, even
though temporarily unobserved. It decided to accomplish sufficient achievements so that
its merits would stand out to an observant eye, but not so many that its numerals would
be forced before the view of the multitude, which always is willing to recognize genius
after it has been sufficiently advertised. This course v\'as carefully followed, as the record
of the class shows:
In the inter-class tugs-of-war, it has never once been pulled ihrough the pond. It
has never been defeated in an inter-class debate. In the other inler-class competitions
it has won as many victories as its policy would permit. At Tuiane Night, both in 1917
and 1918. its originality and genius attracted popular attention. The members of the
class have individually gone forward and won the highest offices in the university. It
has been more than proportionately represented on all varsity teams. In every way pos-sible,
it has proven itself individually and collectively the greatest class ever at Tuiane.
But it firmly believed in the maxim that "fools' names and fools' faces, etc." and accord-ingly
carefully limited its success to avoid the cheap publicity to be derived from gaudy-colored
numbers painted on a vulgar water-lank, like any patent medicine might be
advertised.
I he lest has gone far enough. Recognition and fame were the inevitable conse-quences
of such a brilli.vnt course as th.it of the (Mass of 1920; but they came sooner
and more forcibly ih.iii expected. Rather ihan see our university suffer further humilia-lion
uc slip Iciitli ,uul liiiw Id the .icclaims of the inullilude. With such glory in throe
short years, llie liiluic ol smh ,i class is incoiKeiN.ilile.

Sophomore Class History
HEN we were Freshmen, long, long ego, in the fail of 1917, we were just
as raw as the rawest of all Freshmen. We looked over the University
and immediately realized how much we were needed. Right away we
organized and started on our path of victory.
In the glorious Freshman-Sophomore fight of 1918, we captured the
"Soph" President. We mobilized our "motor transport corps," and brought him over
to the wild and woolly Jefferson Parish when—the Dean declared a truce and peace set-ded
o'er all once again.
The inter-class contests resulted in a draw, the brave "Sophs" refusing to consider
a deciding event, being well satisfied to have done that well in competition with '2 I
.
In some mysterious way the numerals of the class of 1 92 1 got on the tank and
nobody raised any strenuous objections.
In our Freshman year we furnished the varsity eleven with six men, the basketball
team with one, and five varsity wrestlers. This year after being handicapped by the
S. A. T. C, we started out with a rush. Spirit? That hardly explains it. We were
the first class to organize, and at our first meeting we decided primarily to bring "pep"
to Tulane and then to take all of the freshness out of the fresh "Freshies."
The Freshmen regulations were made stricter than ever before and, unaided by the
upper classmen, we, the Class of 1921, enforced these regulations. On January 21,
1919, the date decided on for the donning of green caps by the Freshmen and the loss
of the privilege of using the front and inside center steps of Gibson Hall, the Sophomore
Class assembled at 8:15 A.M. and waited for the Freshies in battle formation. An un-disputed
victory was gained by '21, and just twenty-one Freshmen hats were taken. Now
more Freshmen wearing green caps are to be seen on the campus. A few days later
the Freshmen-Sophomore wrestling tournament was held, in which, of course, '2
1 was
victorious, as we shall be in all of our future inter-class contests.
So let's lift the glass to the spirit of Tulane; the Class of 1921, may her glory never
lessen—the class whose watchword is, "Tulane, first, last and always.

Freshman History
this camp.
J: EFORE going into the Freshman Class History I would like to give a lew
facts about the pre-historic period when all classmen were either barracks-dwellers
or "flu' evaders. During the first of the scholastic year the Stu-dents'
Army Training Corps was established at Tulane in Camp Martin
on the back of the campus. Many of the present Tulane students enlisted
After two months of "reveille " the camp was disbanded on account of
the signing of the armistice.
All during these two months the college work had been alternating with the "flu."
Not much had been accomplished and it was so near the Christmas holidays that the
authorities decided to close the University until January. None of the students seemed
to object, either.
On January, the second, college reopened. The classes were organized and work
started. It was easy to see that the Freshman Class as a whole was not as green as
Freshmen classes generally are. This fact was due to two reasons: First, they had
some knowledge left from the pre-historic period just mejitioned ; second—well, we will
not boast. Wc ask anyone to study closely any member ol the class. We feel safe in
leaving it to your judgment. On the other hand, look at the average Sophomore. They
would make pretty good Freshmen now, but imagine, if you can. how much like a bit
of Springtime they must have looked in the Fall of 1917.
After things had settled down the class was organized. We were wearing the green
caps as has been the custom of all s^lf-respecting Freshmen classes.
It was not until everything had settled down that we began to reah/e that we were
entering the last phase of the preparation for our life's work. We soon found that this
was not high school. Wc were supposed to bo at college to learn. .So wliether we
learned anything or not was of our own choosing. May we all choose to learn.
The Committee on Student Regulations decided lii.it the contests between the Fresh-men
and Sophomores should be arranged so that the Freshmen might have lime to pre-pare
themselves. However, the first contest was held immediately, so the Sophomores,
with a year's experience, outwrestled us. But we will even up the score in basketball,
I am sure.
I know the class is with me when I say that we appreciate the fact that wc have
taken a big stride lownrds success when wc entered the awe-inspiring corridors of old

Dear Reader:
Senior Technology
Thomas Hall, Tulane, February 25, 1919.
The Technology Class of 1919 thanks you for your interest in reading these few lines.
We, who were a part of Tulane during the war which is just over, saw the work
of our Faculty in war activities and hope that we shall be able to meet emergencies as
they did.
We are proud of the members of our class who went off to the firmg line to join
the hundreds of Tulane alumni, and venerate our classmate who made the supreme sacri-fice.
We only hope to measure to the Tulane standard.
Respectfully,

^X'^c draw upon the dusk of olden days,
Juniors today tomorrow even more.
But where relentless time through progress strays
Reverberates the distance with that roar.
And hfc and life anew:
Life of struggle—life of triumph, too.
We have our destmy—our destiny; and o'er
The shadows of (he pail a glory blaze.
Look yc upon this year with sanguine breath.
Time-honored, worn, and drooping down with care,
Here silence, rising as prompting wraith,
Memorializes ev'n our hopes, despair.
But life and life lo face:
And we have triumphed in the span we trace
With but a bit of burden yet lo bear.
Till our plodding days consign lo death.
And dusk of olden days; and shadows casi
Beyond the tempest where the roaring cease;
Yet glory o'er ihe shadows of the pasi:
In dusk the triumph, and the minds release.
And life and life again.
Life of struggle, strength and power remain.
\X'e ve waged the battle, we have won, and peace
We gather now as harvest of the last.

Sophomore Technology Class History
UR class has added to Us history the events of another year. From the
day that the individual members entered the University we have shown
that we were ahve and active, and the College has heard from us in more
ways than one. In our Freshman year we lost the tug-o'-war, but we put
up a good fight and the opposing team wasn't able to boast of an easy
victory. The score was a tie for the inter-class football game, but we furnished men
for the varsity team that won the game with L. S. U. for the first time in fourteen years.
We lost the debating contest, but it must be remembered that we debated against the
varsity team. We won the inter-class basketball and baseball game;, and also the track
meet, thereby ticing the Sophomore Class for the privilege of painting ihc numerals on
the tank.
We have guided this year's Freshmen in the paths of righteousness and have endeav-ored
to instil into them the sense of responsibility, which they assume upon matriculating at
a University. We have enforced the Freshmen Regulations more strictly this year than
they have been enforced in the past, only in order to m<ike ihem better college men. We
won the wrestling tournament which was held in January. Some of our actions were not
approved by all. We offended the Seniors when we erased their numerals from the tank
and substituted ours.
There are necessarily numerous omissions, due to the linuud space; it is therefore
not fair to judge the Sophomore (lass entirely by this brief history.
To give mention of the numerous Sophomores who have distinguished themselves in
the various college activities would occupy loo much space, but it is only proper to men-lion
that several members of our class have been honored with a monogram. I he Sopho-mores
feel justified in claiming a share of the honors connected with college life.
I'kank L. Rainold, Hisloiian.
